Why is Phonetics studied?
To us, speaking and listening to speech comes so naturally. Have you ever consciously thought about what processes are involved in this? This is exactly what Phonetics aims to do. It aims to give a “systematic, conscious consideration of how speech sounds are made, what they sound like, and how they compare with each other”.
Objectives
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: 1. Understand the system of sound and sound combinations in English (Phonology). 2. Understand how sounds are produced, how they are transmitted, and how they are perceived (Phonetics). 3.Differentiate between consonants and vowels. 4. Pronounce English sounds in isolation and in connected speech. 5. Differentiate between consonants and vowels in all word-positions. 6. Distinguish phonemes and allophones. 7. Know the structure of the English syllable. 8. Know the different types of stress in English. 9. Distinguish strong and weak forms. 10. Know different connected speech processes, such as assimilation, elision, linking, etc. 11. Know the different intonation patterns of English. |

Course Aims and Objectives
The overall aim of the course is to help the students understand the origins of the British people. Consequently the origin of the English language they are studying. Furthermore, the students are provided with detailed guidlines to the British culture and civilisation.

Introduction of the Subject :
This subject is a general over view of basic grammar pattern. It provides the basic instruction in the eight parts of speech; nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections. Likewise, models, conditional, reported speech, passive voice and tenses are elucidated as well.
Objectives :
This course aims to ameliorate students’
level in grammar by :
- Providing interesting information with simple vocabulary in order to increase the student’s desire to learn grammar.
- Explaining Each grammatical rule with relevant examples.
- Testing the learners’ skills and understanding with exercises included in each lecture.

This course will help you to identify and develop the academic skills needed to succeed at university. You will have the opportunity to explore some important academic skills for effective university study, practice applying certain skills and techniques and reflect on how your learning style can influence your approach to studying in higher education
