During the second semester, students are expected to organize their ideas into sentences and paragraphs in order to express themselves effectively and appropriately. To help students practice most writing functions ,a variety of paragraph patterns will be read aloud as models. Strong capitalization and punctuation skills are also emphasized throughout the recommended curriculum.

Aural Skills

This course is for students who wish to upgrade their speaking and listening skills for personal, educational and/or employment purposes. The course focuses on extending speaking and listening skills to improve confidence and develop basic proficiency in speaking and listening. Course activities will include speaking at Canadian Language Benchmark Levels 3 and 4 and listening at Canadian Language Benchmark Level 3 in a variety of communicative situations. The speaking and listening practice will also provide opportunities for language skill development including grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary and pronunciation .

Module: Literary Texts

This course is designed to introduce first year students to a diverse range of literary works and genres.  This foundational module aims to cultivate essential skills in reading, analyzing, and interpreting literary texts while fostering an appreciation for the richness of English literature. Essentially, it aims to lay a solid foundation for the study of literature so as to develop students' literary knowledge as well as critical thinking skills, and establish a deeper grasp of the diverse and enriching world of literary expression.

Main Goals:

By the end of this semester, students will be able to:

Criticise literary works such as ficticious prose, decipher the forms of non-ficticious prose, master the notions of drama and theatre, and acquaint different types of symbolism.

Specific Objectives: Students will:

  1. Distinguish between prose and other literary forms.
  2. Identify and analyze key elements of prose fiction, including plot, character, setting, and theme.
  3. Understand the conventions and purposes of different non-fiction prose.
  4. Acquire a basic understanding of the various types of plays, including tragedies, comedies, and dramas.
  5. Explore different types of symbolism, including the allegory, the fable, and the parable.
  6. Understand the purpose and characteristics of each type of symbolism.
