Domestication and Foreignization
Identity and otherness are two sides of the same coin. They are inextricably linked, and one cannot exist without the other. Identity is the sense of self that we develop based on our experiences, relationships, and social context. It is what makes us feel unique and individual. Otherness, on the other hand, is the perception of someone or something as being different from oneself. It can be based on race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, religion, or any other number of factors.
In the field of translation studies, Identity and otherness are complex and multifaceted concepts that play a significant role. In essence, translation involves bridging the gap between two or more cultures and languages, and the process of negotiating identity and otherness is central to this endeavor. This is what we call : "Domestication and Foreignization" in translation !
